Real comments from Medium post: Tech Recruitment is Broken: Make Companies Respect Your Time
I tend to agree. I refused when I was asked to do tests before anyone even spoke to me. The company outsourced talent search and those guys were optimising their own time, not caring at all about mine. I also had questions to ask before I would agree to proceed so I decided there and then that we are not a good fit even though I otherwise really liked the potential employer. Interviewing is a two-way street, both sides need to invest in the process.

Haha, the industry's hiring practices are terrible. They often test completely irrelevant skills, don't value candidates' time, and they don't communicate transparently.

I'm retired after more than 50 years as a developer. The interview regimen this century is far worse than the last.

Great initiative. This should definitively change. It would be a bit late for me because I'll retire in a couple of years, but, yes, it's about time to change that fundamentally. How can they dare to impose such a time consuming process on a software engineer with a long track record of successful projects and many years of experience and treat them as they are completely new to the matter? On top of that, if one is lucky enough and gets the job, they make contracts that still allow them to fire you on very short notice during the first couple of months because it's still possible that you're just an imposter.

I am with you there. It is ridiculous how big those home assignments can get and then : don't actually get reviewed. If they actually have to compensate, the stuff you already have on your github would get relevant, quickly 😆

hey in fairinterviews.careers would you be interested in making room for product designers as well? I believe we (product designers) share a lot of your pain points during the recruitment process while searching for a new and better job

Make'em pay. Sounds fair. let's see who implements the platform for this first. Transparency and better communication - what can go wrong? For real - what can go wrong? :)

I completely agree with you. It’s not just a waste of time but also a significant drain on our energy and focus as software developers. After investing months preparing for these interview processes, it feels disheartening to realize how much time is taken away from meaningful work or growth opportunities. Many of the steps are overly complex and, more importantly, often irrelevant to the actual responsibilities and challenges we face in real-world development. I truly hope companies start re-evaluating their hiring practices to make them more aligned with practical, real-life scenarios and respectful of candidates’ time.
